MALAWI REGISTERS 125 SUICIDE CASES IN 13 MONTHS

From the month of September 2018 to June 2019, 125 people have committed suicide in the country. Out of 125 people 4 are women.

National Police Spokesperson, James Kadadzera, has attributed the rise in suicide cases to infidelity.

“We have recorded 125 suicide cases and out of these cases 121 are men and 4 are women. Infidelity, chronic illness, and protracted debts are major factors contributing to increased suicide cases in the country”, said Kadadzera.

He also said Malawi Police Service has registered 8 attempted suicide cases, adding that northern and central regions are where most suicide cases are being committed.

He however asked Malawians to desist from taking their own lives, instead they should seek advice from community opinion leaders, like faith leaders, village heads and police when they have issues.

Psychologist, Dr. Chiwoza Bandawe, says hopelessness and relationship issues are major factors forcing men to commit suicide in Malawi.
