Analyst Says Rejection of Mwapasa as Police IG is a Must, Priority for Malawi

Political Commentator Makhumbo Munthali has said the need for Malawi Parliament to reject Duncan Mwapasa as Inspector General of Police is not an option but a must and priority for Malawi if the post-election events are anything to go by.

According to Munthali, police have failed Malawians under the full watch of Mwapasa as the acting IG in as far as discharging duties of the nation security is concerned.

“It doesn’t require one to be a political, legal or security analyst to appreciate how the Malawi Police Service has been deeply captured by the “ruling” Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) under the watch of one Duncan Mwapasa,” writes Munthali on his Facebook page.

Munthali continued that if Mwapasa is confirmed as police IG it will be a betrayal to the public interest and “indeed a reward of impunity”

Munthali continued; “Posterity will judge the current crop of MPs harshly for allowing impunity triumph over democracy through confirming an appointment whose ultimate purpose has nothing with public interest but rather to reinforce a reign of terror and politics of poverty of ideas”

The youthful analyst added that a call to the rejection of Mwapasa “is important that Parliament prioritized reforms in the appointment of Inspector General of Police for posterity sake”

Responding to those seeing nothing wrong for Mutharika to be appointing such post and subject to Parliament for confirmation “it is the President who has much powers to limit the scope from which Parliament can confirm from”

He continued; “At the end of the day, we have often seen the President appointing ruling party stooges, and often using their numerical advantage in Parliament or in some cases bribing some independent MPs and Opposition in order to confirm their stooge,”

“At the end of the day it is Malawians who are given a raw deal. Malawi is at crossroad, and we can’t afford to keep quiet and see our country degenerate into a Police state,”

“When all is said and done, Mwapasa -just like his predecessor- is a typical embodiment of impunity and “politics of poverty of ideas”, and should never be allowed to be an IG for Malawi if we are really serious about reforming our Police”
