Information reaching Faceofmalawi indicates that learners from Shire Primary School in Area 49 in the capital Lilongwe are in running battles with armed police officers.

According to information at hand, the learners want to reclaim the land meant for the school’s ground which was taken by Malawi Housing Corporation (MHC).

It is said that in the past weeks the school committee and the parents held series of meetings on how well they can reclaim the land which was unlawfully grabbed.

According to an eyewitness, the learners came to school this morning with the sole purpose of holding demonstrations over the matter.

The learners were armed with stones and tree branches and it took the intervention of the police who fired teargas at the angry learners.

The learners retaliated by pelting stones at the law enforcers and the situation turned ugly.

Meanwhile the situation is still tense at the school.
