Family Planning Group Embarks on Engaging Youths in Bringing Down Abortion Cases

An influential family planning lobby group has hinted on widening its scope in engaging youths in a bid to bring down cases of abortions.

Clinical officer for Family Planning Association of Malawi in Dowa – Angel Bandawe has said the country was registering a worrisome trend of rise in cases of abortion.

According to Bandawe, the trend was even more worrisome as “many girls were having unsafe abortions.”

Meanwhile, in a bid to reverse the situation, he said, the organization has embarked on the project dubbed ‘She Decides’ aimed at combating unsafe abortions among youths in the country.

A recent study conducted by College of Medicine indicated that abortion-related complications are contributing to about 23.5 percent of maternal deaths.

Currently abortion is illegal in Malawi and punishable under Penal Code of 1930 and would be subjected to 14 years imprisonment.

According to law; any expectant woman who unlawfully uses any means to terminate her abortion would be subjected to seven years imprisonment.
