Police says no one claimed ownership of two crocodiles killed in Mangochi

The Police in Mangochi have trashed rumours hovering on social media claiming that the law enforcers in the district killed two crocodiles belonging to a villager.

Social media was awash with reports that a villager from Mpondasi loadged a complaint that the law enforncers killed his crocodiles that were causing havoc in the district.

In a statement made available to Faceofmalawi, Mangochi Police Public Relations Officer Rodrick Maida quashed the claims, saying the rumours are untrue.

“Mangochi Police Station is refuting social media claim that the Station received a complaint from one of the villagers in Mponda claiming ownership of two crocodiles that were shot dead in Shire River on 5th and 7th November, 2019 respectively.

“The said two crocodiles caused havoc around Mpondasi dock between October and early November, 2019 in which two people were killed by the fierce crocodiles,” reads part the statement.

He added: “Mangochi Police in conjunction with National Parks and Wildlife took the initiative to hook the animals before shooting them to death.

“It is therefore fake news and abuse of social media that the two shot dead crocodiles belonged to a person as there is nobody who lodged a complaint of that nature at Mangochi Police Station.”

Meanwhile it is not known as to who fabricated the story.
