Boy Killed by a Crocodile in Nkhotakota

A 15 year old boy was killed by a Crocodile Sunday, December 22 in Ling’ona River in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Malengachanzi in Nkhotakota District.

Nkhotakota Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Williams Kaponda identified the deceased as Mickson Jamson, who on the day went to Ling’ona River for swimming in the company of his friends.

“While swimming, the deceased was attacked by a Crocodile which compelled his friends to call for help. However, by the time the well-wishers arrived, the victim was already dead,” he said.

In a related development, Monday, December 23, 2019 an elderly woman identified as Merenika Timothy, died after being attacked by a Crocodile in Lake Malawi at Ngala fishing camp in the district.

According to Nkhunga Police Public Relations Officer, Ignatius Esau, the deceased on this day was washing her clothes when a crocodile dragged her deep into Lake Malawi.

“Villagers mobilized an engine boat and went searching for the missing woman. Later, they retrieved her from the waters but she was already dead,” he said.

Esau said postmortem conducted at Ngala Health Centre indicated suffocation as the root cause of death.

Police in Nkhotakota have since cautioned communities especially during the rainy season, when lakes and rivers are infested with crocodiles.

The deceased, Mickson Jamson and Merenika Timothy hailed from Nzeru village in the area of TA Malengachanzi in Nkhotakota district and Damalekani village in the area of TA Kachindamoto in Dedza district respectively.
