Teachers to go on strike from January 20 over unpaid December salaries

Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) has organized a sit in and demonstration in all District councils with their members (Teachers and Lecturers) starting Monday 20th January,2020.

The strike has been organized following failure by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) led government to pay teachers and Lecturers their December salaries.

This has been disclosed in a letter dated January 17, 2020 addressed to the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Education Science and Technology (MoEST) seen by Faceofmalawi reporter.

According to the letter, government deliberately removed the affected teachers and Lecturers on government payroll on grounds that they did not provide National Identity Cards to relevant authorities.

“Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) would like to inform you that it will be holding demonstrations in District Councils (DCs) and its members will be on sit in starting from Monday the 20th of January, 2020,” reads in part the statement.
