University of Livingstonia student dies in road accident

A 24 year old University of Livingstonia (UNILIA) student on Wednesday afternoon died in a road accident at Livingstonia Market in Rumphi District.

Rumphi Police Deputy Public Relations Officer (DPRO), Sergeant Tupeliwe Kabwilo said Kondwani Jere met his fate when a motorbike tax operator lost control when he wanted to overtake a motor vehicle.

“The deceased hired a T-Better motorbike from Livingstonia Primary School going to Livingstonia University. This motorbike was operated by Lindani Mkolongo.

“On arrival at Livingstonia Market, Mkolongo wanted to overtake a motor vehicle registration number BK 5827 Toyota Land Cruiser, belonging to UNILIA School which was driven by Alexander Phiri of Ezunguleni Village under Traditional Authority (TA) Mmbelwa in Mzimba,”the DPRO explained.

Kabwilo said when Phiri was turning his vehicle to the right side junction, the motorbike operator lost control of his motorbike and swerved to the extreme offside where he hit a road side pillar.

She added “following the impact, Jere, the pillion passenger sustained head injuries and died on spot whilst the operator sustained minor injuries and is admitted to Livingstonia Gordon Hospital,”

The DPRO said the motorcycle had its front carrier bent, spot lights broken while the driver escaped unhurt and the vehicle had no damage.

The deceased hails from Chigagu Village in Traditional Authority (TA) Mpherembe in Mzimba District.

Police are appealing to all road users to be cautious.
