HRDC To Close MEC Offices to Force Jane Ansah Out

Organizers of Anti-Ansah demonstrations, Human Rights Defenders Coalition Have said they will close Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) offices as one way to force the electoral body chair to step down following the Constitutional Court Judgment.

Chairperson for the coalition Timothy Mtambo said this in Lilongwe were they are addressing the press.

According to Mtambo, the Constitutional Court’ decision to nullify the May 21, 2019 presidential election results is heavenly sent.

Maintaining their stand to force Ansah to resign, Mtambo said if she (Ansah) remains adamant, they will be forced to invade MEC offices and shut down until She step down.

Apart from stepping down, HRDC has said they will demand an apology from the MEC chair and also all MECC commissioners should face charges.

Aftermath of the May 21, 2019 polls the coalition has been taking Malawians to the streets o demonstrate against Ansah who is alleged to mismanage the polls, but she remained adamant.

When talking to a certain media house, Ansah said by then the matter was in court citing that only the court would determine her fate if they ruled that the elections were indeed marred with irregularities.

On February 3, 2020, the Constitutional Court which presided over the case, nullified the presidential polls arguing that the declared winner, President Peter Mutharika was not duly elected.

Ansah is therefore seen betraying her own words as she has not come in the open to step down following court judgment hence HRDC’s move to shut down MEC offices and force her out of office.

Meanwhile, Mutharika has appealed to the Supreme Court against the panel of five judges’ decision to revert his May 21 victory saying the judgment undermined the will of the people.
