Judgment Day: Malawi is Deserted! as Constitutional Court is Delivering its Ruling on May 21, 2019 Presidential Elections Case

As the presidential elections case judgment is being delivered at the Constitutional Court in Lilongwe, Area 3, the country’s major cities have been deserted as business premises have been closed down.

Face of Malawi understands that most business owners have closed their shops in fear of violence that might erupt with the influence of the court’s decision over the presidential elections case.

However, security agents have been deployed and position themselves in strategic places in each and every corner of the country’s major cities to ensure that no one causes trouble that will lead to the country’s unrest.

In Mzuzu, business operators have closed their shops, only few are seen in the streets.

Blantyre streets are almost empty with most shops closed today save for a few that remain opened.

A few vendors are selling their products, both in the streets and at the flea markets.

Police officers are seen guarding some premises like Chipiku Stores, the only big retail shop that has been opened today, apart from Shoprite at Chichiri Shopping Mall.

Business moving at a slow pace in Zomba, most of the shops are closed and many of the streets are clear, with a low number of people.

United Transformation Movement (UTM) President Saulos Chilima and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) leader Lazarus Chakwera filed a complaint to court to nullify presidential result polls which were held on May 21, 2019 and were in favor of President Peter Mutharika.

According to the petitioners, the whole electoral process was marred with irregularities hence questioning the authenticity of the poll results thus their move to pray to court to nullify the results.

On May 27, 2019 the electoral body, Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) through its Chairperson Justice Jane Ansah declared a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) president Mutharika as the rightful winner of the polls.

Today the panel of five judges Healey Potani, Mike Tembo, Ivy Kamanga, Dingiswayo Madise and Levison Kapindu, presiding over the elections case is expected to make it ruling on the matter.

Meanwhile, the head of panel of five judges presiding over the presidential elections case Justice Healey Potani has started delivering presidential elections case ruling.
