MEC denies appealing Constitutional Court ruling nullifying May 21 polls

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has refuted rumours hovering on the social media claiming that the electoral body has filed for an appeal against the constitutional court’s ruling which nullified the 2019 Presidential election results.

This morning the media was awash with reports that President Peter Mutharika is preparing for an appeal at the Supreme Court, arguing that there was serious miscarriage of justice during the court ruling.

This was followed by reports that the electoral body has also filed for an appeal on the same matter.

But MEC Spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa quashed the rumours, saying the electoral body is yet to make a decision on the matter.

According to Mwafulirwa, MEC will soon make its decision on the same to the public in due course.

The constitutional court on Monday nullified the May 21 polls and called for fresh election within a period of 150 days.

The court also ordered the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to pay the petitioners (UTM, MCP) costs incurred in the case.
