Malawians today take to the streets pushing for the resignation of the Malawi Electoral Commission Chairperson, Jane Ansah, Commissioners and the entire management of the electoral body for messing up the May 21, 2019 presidential election.
Led by the Human Rights Defenders Coalition-HRDC, the concerned citizens argue time has come for the current Commission to go following a Constitutional Court ruling that found the Commission to be grossly incompetent
HRDC Chairperson Timothy Mtambo has since appealed to well meaning Malawians to patronize the protests dubbed “Operation MEC Shutdown”.
The country holds a fresh presidential election in less than 150 days following the nullification of last year’s poll by the Court citing serious irregularities that marred it.
On Thursday, Mtambo and his vice, Gift Trapence were spotted in Lilongwe buying chains and locks in readiness for the MEC Shutdown.
