Police rescue a man from angry mob

Police in Mzuzu on Wednesday rescued a man, Ganizani Nkhwinda from an angry mob who wanted to burn him for allegedly tricking a business woman and defrauding her of K50, 000.

Mzuzu Police Public Relations Officer, Edith Kachotsa said it is alleged Nkhwinda and his accomplice have been cheating people that they own assorted merchandise which they offer at give-away prices.

Kachotsa said the two were targeting people who showed willingness to buy.

“On Wednesday, February 26, 2020, the two persuaded a certain woman to buy a phone at a price of K50, 000 at Zigwagwa Market area.

“The tricksters did not know that they were recognised by another woman whom they tricked for the same amount the previous day,” Kachotsa said.

She said the woman they duped the previous day alerted the community around who apprehended Nkhwinda while his accomplice managed to run away.

The angry mob then started assaulting him while others were organising fuel to burn him.

“Fortunately, a well-wisher informed the police who rushed to the scene and rescued Nkhwinda,” she said.

Kachotsa said Ganizani Nkhwinda, who hails from Solo Village in Traditional Authority Thomas in Thyolo District, will answer a theft-by-trick charge.
