Speaker of the National Assembly Catherine Gotani Hara has said Parliament has no choice but to comply with orders of the Constitutional Court that it should legislate laws regarding elections and pass it within a period of 21 days.
Hara said this during media briefing held at Parliament in the capital Lilongwe.
She said Parliament will work around the clock with effect from today to ensure the law (50+1 voting system) is passed within 21 days of Parliament meeting.
Hara said it’s not a new law as others are arguing, saying it has been there in the Constitution & the court has simply intepreted it & asked Parly to make enabling legislation.
Members of Parliament will start meeting on Monday, February 10.
The Constitutional Court on Monday nullified the May 21 polls and called for fresh election within a period of 150days.
The Court also ordered Parliament to bring back into the house the 50+1 electoral to prevent any further irregularities in the forthcoming polls.
The Concourt also ordered the Parliament to consider extending the term of the current lawmakers and Councillors to 6 years to suit the term of the yet to be elected President of the republic of Malawi.
