Zimbabwean Woman Kills Nephew for Coming Home Late, Attempts To Commit Suicide

A 68-year-old Zimbabwean woman is alleged to have fatally strangled her nephew with his neck-tie for coming home late, iHarare reports.

Realising she had committed the crime, the accused then attempted to commit suicide by drinking some poisonous substance.

According to state media reports, the incident occurred when Modene Chirinda confronted her 13-year-old nephew, Macdonald Chirinda, for coming home late the previous day.

The deceased attempted to flee from the scene after the accused charged at him in a fit of rage. Unfortunately, he was grabbed by his neck-tie before he could make the escape.

The boy is reported to have tried to scream for help but the grandmother continued to pull the tie until he suffocated. Upon realising that the Grade Seven pupil was now unconscious the grandmother attempted to commit suicide by poisoning herself.

The boy’s body was taken to Masvingo General Hospital mortuary for postmortem while the woman was rushed to hospital for treatment. Sources at the hospital confirmed the suicide attempt and revealed that the woman was frothing from the mouth.

Masvingo police spokesperson Chief Inspector Charity Mazula said the incident happened last Thursday in Rhodene Low-Density Suburb at around 6 AM.

“Yes, we received such a report but police are still carrying out investigations to figure out what exactly transpired. The case was reported from Rhodene’s Carry Street. It involves an elderly woman and her nephew who was attending Gokomere Primary.”
