S3xual Harassment Is Being Fuelled By High Unemployment Rate, Says Activista

One of the Malawi Activista member Chimwemwe Zindondo said, sexual harassment at work palace to women being fuelled by high unemployment rate.

“For a woman to get a job these days’ most employers ask for sexual favours and because of desperation for a job most women fall for it,” Zindondo said.

She continued by saying that, women are sexually harassed because they fear that if they report the cases to the police or authorities they will be rendered jobless.

Malawi Congress of Trade Union (MCTU) Deputy Director, Jessie Ching’oma said the economy of the country is not growing that much which is prompting many workers especially women to take anything for a job.

“Many people especially women, they don’t care whether they will be exposed to a number of hazards or risks and most of their rights are not respected once they take the job,” she noted.

Zindondo has asked stakeholders to create more awareness campaigns so that women should be aware of their rights at work place and that they should be able to report the cases of abuse which they face at work to the relevant authorities.
