Chilima condemns hiring of foreign lawyers by MEC

State Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima who is also President of the United Transformation Movement (UTM) has condemned the hiring of foreign lawyers by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) at over MK600 million in the appeal case of the Presidential polls case scheduled to commence on April 15, 2020.

Speaking during a public rally at Njamba Freedom Park in the commercial capital on Sunday, Chilima said is shocking that the electoral body continue to plunder public funds by hiring foreign lawyers on case they cannot win.

“The reported K600m given to the South African tootsie lawyers could have make a difference in the country’s public health system. Our major referral hospitals lack basic resources like beds and essential drugs,” said Chilima.

Chilima also reminded President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika of the hunger situation in Malawi.

“I know that you are watching this rally Mr President. I’m here to convince you with the fact that this country is starving. Millions face hunger, including in areas of Thyolo, Mulanje, Phalombe.

“It could have been wise of us as a country to ensure no-one dies of hunger than spending the much scarce resources on useless legal battles,” he said.

Turning to the alliance, Chilima urged UTM supporters to accept the outcome of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) alliance with UTM, saying the country cannot have two leaders at a time.

Meanwhile it is yet to be known as to who will lead the UTM/MCP alliance ahead of the fresh Presidential polls on May 19, 2020.
