Man dies after vandalizing Escom cables

A 48-year-old man identified as Fred Chilonga has died after he fell down from an Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) transformer poles in Thyolo district.

Thyolo Police Public Relations Officer, Amos Tione said the incident happened between February 27 – 28, 2020 and on the fateful day, the deceased went into Conforzi Tea Plantations Limited to syphon fuel and extract copper wire.

“In the process, the deceased fell down before syphoning the fuel. He was found under ESCOM poles and transformer. According to ESCOM officials, there was no sign of electrocution,” said Tione.

In a related development, a 15-year-old girl identified as Ulita Lameck was electrocuted at Namingomba Tea Estate on February 24, 2020.

The deceased, according to Tione was following her mother to her mothers work place, she stepped on a loose ESCOM wire.

“She died right on the spot,” said Tione.

In the meantime, police in Thyolo district are advising people to be cautious with electricity materials.

Chilonga hailed from Molande Village in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Nchilamwera in Thyolo, while Ulita hailed from Kasaila Village in T/A Mphuka in the same district.
