Two Robbers Jailed To 4 Years For Stealing Two Cellphones Worth K21,000

The Dowa First Grade Magistrate’s Court has convicted and sentenced two men to serve a 4 year jail sentence for stealing cellphones in separate crime events whose total value is K21,500.

Dowa police station Public Relations Officer (PRO) Sub Inspector Gladson M’bumpha said the two wereanswering to the offence of robbery with violence.

“Jazimoni Michael, 22, from Besela Village in Traditional Authority Msakambewa in Dowa has been sentenced to 54 months imprisonment with hard labour for robbery with violence while on similar charge, Hopeson Kachigunda, 23, from Kalumo Village in Traditional Authority Kalumo in Ntchisi District has been sentenced to 48 months.” Said Sub Inspector M’bumphaHe said state prosecutor Sub Inspector Ezala Bakili told court that the first convict Michael robbed a cellphone worth K15, 000 from Peterson Sinjania during the night of January 20, 2020 at Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Dowa District while the second convict Kachigunda, robbed a cellphone and cash amounting to K11, 000 Tembo Langson during the night of December 29, 2019 at Mayani Junction in Dowa District.

“The total value of stolen properties are K21,500 butthe convicts used actual violence to the two victimsin order to overcome resistance.In his submission, state prosecutor Bakili asked the court to mete out stiffer punishments to the offenders, saying the offence is serious in nature.” Disclosed M’bumphaThe Dowa Police PRO said First Grade Magistrate Amran Phiri concurred with the state and sentenced Jazimoni Michael to 54 months IHL and Hopeson Kachigunda was sentenced to 48 months IHL.In a related development, the same court has convicted and sentenced 19-year-old Monga Ombenfrom South Kivu Province in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to 24 months imprisonment with hard labour for breaking into a building with intent to commit a felony therein.

The court learnt that the convict during the night of January 6, 2020 at Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Dowa District broke and entered the shop of John Habimana Konseyi and stole therein one carton of Tiger Head Batteries, 4 cartons of Azam Soap, 10 packets of yeast, 4 blankets, body care glycerine, all valued at K266,000.
