UTM/MCP Set March 27 a Day of ‘Resentment’ to Force MEC Chair Out of Office

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and United Transformation Movement (UTM) have set March 27 as a day of rage following Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Jane Ansah’s refusal to leave office.

This has been said this morning during the two parties’ joint press briefing in Lilongwe.

According to the allies, they have asked their supporters to stay away from work instead of going into the streets since there is an order restricting huge gathering due to coronavirus pandemic.

Aftermath of May 21, 2019 elections Malawians and different stakeholders have been baying for Ansah’s head to leave MEC premises following the role she played in the last polls.

Despite the calls, Ansah has been adamant to leave MEC as she is determined to manage the fresh presidential polls.

Public Appointments Committee (PAC) of Parliament also recommended the firing of MEC chairperson and all commissioners after the committee asses the competence of commissioners.

President Peter Mutharika in response to the report submitted to him by PAC made it clear that he will not fire Ansah and all commissioners.
