Chakwera accuses MEC of creating fake voters’ roll

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has accused the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) of creating fake voters roll with aim of rigging the forthcoming fresh Presidential polls.

Chakwera said this on Wednesday during a media briefing in the capital Lilongwe.

According to Chakwera, the party’s ICT department has discovered that over 7,000 minors have already registered to vote in the July 2 election.

“Our investigators have been following these. A young man in Chikwawa called Ephraim who will turn 18 in 2 weeks time. His ID was scanned by MEC officials. But to his surprise his ID was already in the MEC voters roll. Registered 2 years ago under a different name and date of birth. Someone at MEC used Ephraim to create a fake MEC voter’s ID,” said Chakwera.

He added: I know it is not easy to hear that your IDs are being stolen. But when I answered your call to be your servant, I promised to tell you the truth. Dr Saulos Chilima and I have joined forces to fight this. I have directed my legal team to ensure that a court order is issued to ensure that NRB ID is audited and the same is done with MEC’s data base. We will not stop until all those responsible are brought to justice.”
