Blantyre Synod denies pocketing MK70 million from DPP to support Mutharika’s 21 days lockdown

The Blantyre Synod of the CCAP has denied allegations that it has received K70 million from Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government to fully support the 21 days lockdown declared by President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika.

On Tuesday last week Mutharika declared 21 days lockdown to control the spread of coronavirus in the country.

The declaration received strong criticisms from all corners with Human Right Defenders Coalition (HRDC) rushing to court to obtain an injunction stopping the lockdown.

This week the social media has been awash with reports that the Blantyre Synod has pocked MK70 million to support the 21 days lockdown.

But speaking in a media briefing in Blantyre, the Synod’s General Secretary, Reverend Dr. Billy Gama trashed the rumours, saying the Synod has not received K70 million from anyone to support the lockdown.

Reverend Gama said the rumour is fake aimed at tarnishing the image of the church.

Gama said the CCAP has implemented preparatory measures in an event of a lockdown i.e congregating through Whattsapp groups and follow sermons via the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation and Blantyre synod radio.

Malawi has registered 17 cases of COVID-19 with two deaths.
