Mtambo announced his resignation this morning during media briefing in the capital Lilongwe where he also disclosed of his plan to launch a political movement called Citizens For Transformation, a People Power Movement.

In a short statement posted on its facebook page, HRDC said the grouping will now be led by Gift Trapence as Acting.

“HRDC accepts the #Resignation of its founding Chairperson Comrade #TimothyMtambo. We believe he is just exercising his rights and freedom of association and conscious. We wish him well in his next endeavors of life”

“#GiftTRapence , is meanwhile the HRDC Acting Chairperson,” reads the statement.

On his part, Billy Mayaya, one of the human right activists in the country hailed Mtambo for standing for Malawians.

“Thank you Timothy for leading HRDC during a tumultuous period in Malawi’s history. All the best as you begin the second chapter. A lutta continua!,” wrote Mayaya.

Mtambo has been in the forefront demanding for the immediate resignation of Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Dr. Jane Ansah for failing to manage the nullified May 21, 2019 Presidential polls.

Recently Mtambo together with Trapence and MacDonald Sembereka were arrested for planning to Shutdown State House residences across the country with an aim of pushing President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika to assent into law the electoral bills.
