Mutharika brushes off PAC’s call to fire MEC commissioners

President professor Arthur Peter Mutharika on Wednesday pushed aside a call by the Public Affairs Committee (PAC) to fire all commissioners for the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) led by its Chairperson Jane Ansah for failing to manage the May 21, 2019 Presidential polls.

Mutharika on Wednesday met PAC at Kamuzu Palace in the commercial capital Blantyre where they discussed a number of issues and one of it was the firing of MEC commissioners.

The religious grouping led by Monsignor Patrick Thawale, his vice Osman Karim, executive director Robert Phiri and board member Agnes Kamoto citied loss of public trust as the main reason for the commissioners to be fired.

But Mutharika insisted that there is nothing wrong with the current MEC commissioners.

Mutharika then went further by attacking the religious grouping for failing to condemn the national wide protest organized by the Human Right Defenders Coalition (HRDC).

The country will hold fresh Presidential polls on July 2, 2020 following nullification of the May 21, 2019 Presidential polls by the constitutional court.
