Prophet Mbewe denies joining lockdown injunction case

Prophet David Mbewe, founder of the Living Word Evangelistic Church (Liwec) has denied joining the injunction case against 21-day lockdown imposed by President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika on Tuesday last week.

On Friday morning, there was an interparty hearing at the High Court in the capital Lilongwe regarding an injunction obtained by Human Right Defenders Coalition (HRDC) against lockdown.

The hearing was presided over by Judge Kenyatta Nyirenda and the case proceeded without the presence of the Attorney General Kalekeni Kaphale.

In the course of the hearing, some media houses reported that Prophet Mbewe through his lawyer William Chiwaya has joined the case.

The said media house also reported that Mbewe has filed for an injunction against restrictions on church gatherings.

But speaking in an interview with state controlled Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), Mbewe denies joining the case.

Mbewe said he understands why government ordered for a lockdown in the country.

“Even if that were to be the case, I will be the very last one to take that route because this ministry believes in contact and dialogue and the promotion of peace” said Prophet Mbewe.

Meanwhile Judge Kenyatta Nyirenda has reserved its ruling on the injunction case to Wednesday next week.
