Mother Who Saved Her Children In UTM Office Inferno Dies,Hours After His Son Died

Ayiles Tambala, the woman who was seriously burnt as she showed rare bravado in plucking her five children from a raging fire that trapped her six-member family in a midnight petrol bomb attack on a UTM office in Lilongwe on Monday night, has died from her burns early this Thursday.

“I am sorry to announce the shocking double grief in our community. Mai Tambala died a short while ago. This means she has followed her son Shukran, whom we were planning to bury later today after he died late yesterday afternoon,” announced UTM District Governor Livan Phiri in a grief laden voice in an odd 4:40am telephone alert call that woke up this Nation reporter this Thursday.

Phiri was among community leaders in Area 24 who were holding a night vigil hours before a planned burial of Shukran this Thursday.

“We are heart-broken and very confused, now that we have two bodies in the same family on our hands. We will have to consult on how the burials will be handled, ” Phiri lamented.

Ayiles died from the KCH High Dependence Unit, where she and her husband Seleman were admitted to after the arson attack by suspected hoodlums targeting UTM
