Sudanese police tear gas anti-UN protesters

Police have fired tear gas to disperse demonstrators in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, protesting against a new United Nations mission for the country.

The protesters, who gathered near army headquarters, accused the government of bringing in occupiers.

They chanted “down with the government of informants”.

Last week the UN Security Council approved the Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan, whose mandate is to support the country’s passage to civilian rule.

Sudan is in a three-year transition period with power shared between civilians and the military, following the ousting last year of the long-serving President Omar al-Bashir.
