In a rather shocking plot drawn straight from a Bollywood crime thriller, an inmate in Delhi’s Tihar Jail murdered another to avenge the rape of his minor sister, police said on Monday.
Zakir, who was for long planning to take revenge, stabbed Mehtab with a self-made knife-like metal piece repeatedly, following which the later started bleeding profusely.
He was given an immediate first aid in the jail premises and was rushed to the nearby DDU hospital where he was declared brought dead.
Zakir plotted the murder and was working for long to execute it. He first got himself transferred to the jail ward where Mehtab was lodged in and at the first opportunity launched a fatal attack on him to avenge the fate his sister had to go through.
According to police, Zakir’s sister had “reportedly committed suicide” after her rape. Zakir, police said, would often pick up a fight with his fellow inmates to make it a ground for his transfer from the jail ward where he was previously lodged in.
Meanwhile, DG Prisons of Tihar Jail termed the murder an act of “personal enmity” and filed a case of murder against Zakir at the Hari Nagar Police Station in West Delhi. An Inquest proceeding is being conducted by Metropolitan Magistrate in the case.
Earlier on Sunday, at the time of the incident, hearing the commotion, the staff on duty immediately intervened. The accused inmate was apprehended and the victim shifted for medical treatment.
Victim Mohd Mehtab had been lodged in the jail since 2014 and he was an accused of a rape case in 2014.
