Police Officer’s Bail Who Murdered George Floyd Set At $1,25 Million

Derek Chauvin, the police officer who was charged with the murder of African American man, George Floyd’s bail has been set at $1,25 million

He was charged with second degree murder and appeared at Hennepin County District Court  in Minneapolis via video link.

Chauvin could be released without conditions at a higher bail amount of $1.25 million.

The lower amount of bail which would be 1 million, has conditions which include no contact with Floyd’s family, surrendering firearms and licenses and he would not be allowed to leave the state. .

In a handwritten note on the order, the judge added a stipulation for Chauvin:

“Do not work in law enforcement or security.”

His next hearing will be on the 29th of June.

Chauvin’s charges include second-degree murder and lesser counts of third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

According to the evidence on the video footage, Chauvin was seen pressing his knee on Floyd’s neck for 9 minutes, with the latter saying that he couldn’t breathe.

Floyd then became unresponsive after a fashion and died as a result.

Chauvin’s colleagues Tou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng and Thomas K. Lane, who were present at the scene are being charged with aiding and abetting murder.

Second degree murder has a maximum of 40 years in Minnesota, while 3rd degree murder has a maximum of 25 years.

Floyd’s murder sparked several nationwide protests in the US and in several parts of the world.

There are calls to push for reforms in the criminal  justice system and to eradicate racism together with racially targeted arrests and police brutality.

Floyd will be buried in the Houston area on Tuesday.
