Presidential Taskforce assessing situations on resuming international flights

The Presidential Taskforce on Covid-19 has maintained reservations on the recommendation to resume international flights, as recommended by the Ministry of Transport.

The taskforce Chairperson, Dr. John Phuka, said the taskforce is still assessing the situations in other countries where the flights operate before opening the airports. Phuka also said the taskforce considered the recommendation to resume the flights but it is uncertain when the airports may reopen.

The Ministry of Transport and Public Works has recommended that airports should open for international flights in Malawi, on July 15. The development followed not long after the National Planning Taskforce on education called on the Presidential Taskforce to consider reopening Schools, Colleges and Universities on 13 July, 2020.

Flights in Malawi were halted on 1st May while schools were closed on March 20th as a directive by former President Peter Mutharika, as the directives were aimed at containing the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
