Three Ugandans Arrested for Grabbing President’s Land

Three men in Uganda have been arrested for allegedly grabbing a parcel of land belonging to President Yoweri Museveni.

Peter Segane, Jimmy Suuna and Avola Kennedy were arraigned after investigations linked them to illegal acquisition of five title deeds that had already been registered in Museveni’s name.

The Head of State House Anti-Corruption Unit, Edith Nakalema, told Nile Post they identified inconsistencies and various lapses in the manner in which the deeds were processed.

“We identified several lapses in the processing of the titles at the levels of the Area Land Committee, District Land Board and Ministry of Lands. Working with the police, investigations were initiated and the suspects were arrested,” Nakalema said.

Avola who is a cartographer with the Lands Ministry was believed to have facilitated the transfer of title deeds for the property located at Kabulasoke sub-county in Gomba district.

The Chief Magistrate’s Court in Mpigi ordered the three be remanded until July 28 pending the conclusion of investigations.

This was not the first case of land grabbing targeting Museveni as a similar incident had been reported in 2018.

A commission of inquiry into land matters that was formed in 2018 discovered the president was a victim of illegal transfer of property.

At that time, suspected forged secondary deeds for his land at Kisozi Ranch in Maddu sub-county in the same district where the recent case was exposed.
