Schools to remain closed due to increased number of Covid-19 cases

Presidential Taskforce co-chairperson John Phuka has stressed that all schools will not open on July 13 as previously suggested due to increased number of Covid-19 cases in the country.
He was however quick to point out that the Taskforce will continue to monitor the trend of the pandemic in the country to determine when it is safe to open schools.
“The decision on whether to open schools is guided by a risk-based approach that is centred on the safety of students, their teachers, and the entire community,” he said.
In yesterday’s update, Phuka said the Ministry of Health was running low on coronavirus test kits across the country.
He said as such, the remaining tests kits that were available are being used to test only those with Covid-19 symptoms.
According to Phuka, the country had procured a consignment of additional kits long time back but because of shipment challenges, the stocks have delayed and are expected to arrive in the country in two weeks time.
The Ministry of Health has since advised those who have been in contact with Covid-19 confirmed cases to isolate themselves from the public for 10 to 14 days or call the toll free number – 54747 for the attention of healthcare workers should they develop Covid-19 symptoms.
