DPP promises to support Chakwera’s govt

Opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has promised to support the new government under the able leadership of Dr. Lazarus Chakwera.

Leader of opposition Kondwani Nankhumwa who is also DPP Vice President for the South said this in Parliament on Tuesday afternoon.

“Let me take this opportunity to assure our colleagues on the government side that we, on this side, will provide the new government the necessary support as it embarks on the momentous task of managing the economy and re-uniting Malawians against a backdrop of serious tribal, ethnic and regional divisions.

“Indeed, we will ensure that we engage constructively with government without deliberately opposing for the sake of opposing,” said Nankhumwa.

He added: “Malawians are anxiously waiting to see a new opposition that does not pander to narrow political interests. I will ensure that as parliamentarians, we ought to be positive examples and true representatives of our constituents in the way we behave and conduct business in the House.”

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) declared Chakwera as winner of the fresh presidential polls after outclassing the outgoing President Peter Mutharika.
Chakwera amassed 2.6 million votes representing 58.4 percent against 1.7 million votes of Mutharika, representing 39 percent.

The outcome of the fresh polls affected the sitting arrangement in the national Assembly with MPs from DPP moving to the opposition side.
