Rights groups fight for removal of all restrictive taxes on mobile phones, internet services

Several rights groups are daring authorities to remove all restrictive taxes on mobile phones and internet services to ease access for Malawians.
They are the Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation, Youth and Society, Health and Rights Education Programme and the Collaboration on International ICT Policy for East and Southern Africa.
The activists believe that current average internet price of K15,500 for a 10 GB monthly data bundle on both the TNM and Airtel networks is beyond the reach of many Malawians.
They argue that a majority of Malawians need phone and internet access now more than ever due to the Covid-19 pandemic and related restrictions on movement and contact.
