Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Vice President for the South Kondwani Nankhumwa has expressed shock over the move taken by the party President Peter Mutharika to propose a new name for the post of leader of opposition.

On Wednesday afternoon Deputy Speaker of Parliament Madalitso Kazombo announced in the house that he had received communication from DPP leader Peter Mutharika that the party has opted for Francis Kasaila as its new leader in parliament.

But standing on a point of order Mulanje west MP, Yusuf Chenda challenged the decision arguing the party’s Mps were not consulted in the whole process.

After this, Kazombo ordered that the DPP should properly elect a leader of opposition and not appoint as it has been done.

Speaking in an interview with the press after the saga Nankhumwa asked for more time on the matter.

“Am surprised the communique and let me find out first where all this is coming from. As for now am just shocked,” said Nankhumwa.

Two weeks ago the DPP disciplinary committee summoned Nankhumwa on grounds that he imposed himself as leader of opposition.

The committee also summoned Nankhumwa to explain controversies surrounding his academic qualifications.

But the disciplinary hearing failed after Nankhumwa expressed reservation on the composition of the committee.

Nankhumwa said some of the members of the committee are also interested in the leadership of the party.
