The love of beer turned fatal after a Filabusi man was beaten to death for drinking his friend’s beer without permission.

According to Zimbabwe’s local state-owned publication, the Chronicle, the incident occurred in Filabusi where an angry Melusi Ngwenya (32) of Lunyame Village is alleged to have killed Sibusiso Dube (28) after striking him on the head with a brick for drinking his beer without his permission.  He was arrested for the offense soon after.

Ngwenya appeared before Gwanda magistrate, Miss Lerato Nyathi facing a murder charge. Outlining the case against Ngwenya, the state prosecutor told the court,

“On 10 August 2019 at around 8 PM Ngwenya, Mr Dube and Mr Ndlovu were drinking beer at Lunyame Business Centre. Ngwenya left his beer and went to relieve himself and left his beer behind with Mr Dube and Mr Ndlovu. When he returned Ngwenya noticed that his beer and been consumed.

“He confronted Mr Dube and Mr Ndlovu over the matter and later learnt that Mr Dube had consumed his beer. Ngwenya and Mr Dube had a misunderstanding over the matter and Mr Ndlovu managed to calm them down and they continued drinking,”

However, the issue flared up again when the trio was heading home. Ngwenya was still feeling bitter about his beer and attacked Dube with a brick. Dube was rushed to the local clinic by Ndlovu, but was, unfortunately, pronounced dead on arrival.

Ngwenya was remanded in custody to November 10, 2020, for trial.
