Good governance commentator faults parliament over proposal to drop Muluzi’s corruption case

A renowned good governance commentator has faulted the proposal by the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs for Ant-Corruption Bureau (ACB) to drop the 1.7 Billion Kwacha corruption case involving former President Bakili Muluzi.

Muluzi and his then personal Assistant have for the past 15 years been answering the corruption case at the high court in relation to money amounting to 1.7 Billion Kwacha that was transferred into his personal account when he was state president.

However, the case has been dragging as at one time one of the prosecutors from ACB withdrew from the case.

This has now prompted the Legal Affairs committee of parliament to propose to ACB to consider just dropping the case arguing it is just draining government resources.

But reacting to the proposal, Moses Mkandawire Executive Director of the Church and Society, a governance arm of the CCAP’s Livingstonia Synod has said that dropping the case entails legitimizing mismanagement and plunder of public resources by politician
