Malawi Police Ready to Take Down Copyright Infringers

COSOMA has trained 6 policemen from Malawi’s 3 regions following a Memorandum of understanding with the Malawi Police Service on enforcement of copyright laws in April 3rd 2020.

According to the Executive Director and Copyright Administrator of COSOMA, Dora Makwinja, the training is a step further in its efforts to end copyright infringement.

Superintendent Raphael Mpophiwa, speaking on the sidelines of the training, said the training is not only a want but also a need, he commended COSOMA for conducting the training saying it will assist in sharpening their investigative skills when handling Copyright related cases.

Concurring with Mr. Mpophiwa, one of the participants, Sub-Inspector Salome Jere Magazine said the training is essential as it has familiarized them with COSOMA and its functions in regard to the protection and promotion of creativity.

“It has given us a deep insight on what to look for in our enforcement of the copyright laws, we are more than geared to put the copyright infringers to task”! She said.

The training was held with an aim to equip the police officers with the knowledge they need to carry out their assigned duties. According to the licensing manager, Mr. Mutty Mukhondiya, it is expected that in the year 2025, copyright infringement will have become a thing of the past.
