Police says video footage showing gule wamkulu assaulting suspected thief not from Malawi

The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has come out of the cocoon to comment on a video footage showing individuals dressed in gule wamkulu regalia assaulting a man suspected to have stolen a motorcycle, saying the footage is not from Malawi.

On Tuesday, the social media was awash a video footage where members of the gule wamkulu were assaulting a suspected thief at unknown bush.

One of the gule wamkulu members was quote in the video that the suspected thief will actually be killed in the said bush and will not be seen again.

The video clip attracted mixed reactions with many calling upon the law enforcers to trace the said gule wamkulu members and bring them to book.

But reacting to the news, the law enforcers blushed off the video clip.

“This disturbing video clip showing individuals dressed in gule wamkulu regalia assaulting a man they suspected to have stolen a motorcycle is viral on social media.

“Our investigations show that the place of occurrence is not in Malawi. Further we have no report at any of our police formations regarding this brutal incident,” reads in part the police statement.

Added the statement: “Malawians should refrain from sharing photos, videos or stories they have not verified.”
