Police in Zambia arrested a 43-year-old man of in connection with the murder of his mother.
Eastern Province police commissioner Geza Lungu said Alfred Nyirongo of Pondako village in Phikamalaza’s area murdered Justina Mwandila of the same address using a hoe handle.
Mr Lungu said the incident occurred yesterday around 15:00 hours the deceased sustained a deep cut in the head and severe bleeding from the ears.
“The cause of murder was as a result of an intervention that the mother to the suspect attempted to make during the dispute that arose between the wife and son to the deceased (now the suspect). Police visited the scene of crime and found the dead body lying with a fractured head and severe bleeding from the ears. The hoe handle in question which was allegedly used to murder the deceased has since been recovered. The suspect was apprehended by his relatives and members of the public,” he said.
Mr Lungu said the suspect was however assaulted in the head using the same hoe handle.
He said the suspect was taken to Lundazi district hospital where he was treated and discharged while the body of the deceased was in Lundazi district hospital mortuary awaiting postmoterm.
