The Malawi Congress of Trade Unions MCTU is imploring local employers to start recalling workers who were retrenched due to the pandemic.

In the wake of the coronavirus, some companies retrenched the bulk of their staff, while others opted to put their staff on half-pay to mitigate challenges brought about by the pandemic.

To check the spread of the virus in workplaces, the government formulated guidelines including protection of jobs and incomes while safeguarding the health and safety of employees.

The guidelines also stipulate that where job termination is inevitable, affected employees should receive full terminal benefits in accordance with Section 35 of the Employment Act, as amended in 2011.

MCTU Secretary General, Dennis Kalekeni appeals to companies to start making necessary arrangements especially now when Covid-19 cases are declining.
