SUGAM WANTS GOVT TO PROTECT SUGARCANE GROWERS

The sugarcane Growers Association of Malawi [SUGAM] wants government to protect cane growers from exploitation by millers.

President of the association, Flighton Njolomole disclosed this yesterday in an  emergency board meeting in salima.

Njolomole said that the industry is falling to grow because growers are not benefiting from their toil as the sector is using outdated operational guidelines.

SUGAM acting Executive Secretary, Charles Chavi has since implored on government to expedite processing the sugarcane bill which he believes would protect growers from abuse.

However, Chavi claims that it is only in Malawi where sugar industry is not regulated and growers are at the mercy of millers.
