Zimbabwean Junior Cop Shoots Self Dead With AK-47 Rifle

In a sad development,  a police officer stationed at Ruda Police Station in Hauna decided to take his own life by shooting himself in the head with an AK-47 rifle for an unknown reason.

Constable Lewis Paunganwa (34) was found lying in a pool of blood with an AK-47 rifle in his hand in a radio room.

Lewis’s brother, Luton, confirmed the incident but could not be drawn into divulging more. He said Lewis did not tell anyone if he had any problems that would lead to him ending his life.

Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luxson Chananda also confirmed the tragic incident which happened on Thursday. He said investigations are still in progress.

According to the police report, Constable Paunganwa commenced duties in the morning before others finished their duties around 5 pm.

He, however,  remained behind and at around 11 pm, he proceeded to a radio room where he was later found lying in a pool of blood while holding an AK-47 rifle.

He was found by another officer who was on duty who proceeded to alert the officer-in-charge.

A riffle with 10 rounds was recovered on him. and a spent cartridge was also recovered about two metres away from his body.

Inspector Chananda revealed that they found a small open wound under Paunganwa’s chin and another wide-open wound on the left side of his head.

The bullet reportedly also penetrated and hit the concrete ceiling.

Paunganwa’s body was taken to Nyanga Hospital for postmortem and investigations are still in progress.
