Girls urged to embrace ICT courses

Malawi Communication Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has donated 10 computers, one printer and one photocopier on Monday to Mlanda Girls Secondary School in Ntcheu District as part of celebrating the ‘International Girls in ICT Day’.

The gesture is expected to motivate more girls to pursue Information and Communication Technology (ICT)-related courses as this year’s theme of International Girls in ICT Day is: “Connected Girls, Create Better Future.”

Speaking during the event, Minister of Information, Gospel Kazako who was guest of honour, commended MACRA for the donation and encouraged girls to be courageous enough to lead in various positions in the ICT sector.

“We want girls to change their attitude towards technology; we want women to dominate in different departments in the ICT sector. Therefore, as girls you should not undermine yourselves,”Girls are capable of doing everything as males do. Everything is possible to be achieved if one puts an extra effort to it,” said Kazako.

In his remarks, MACRA board Chairperson, Stanley Khaila, said they (MACRA) donated computers to Mlanda Girls Secondary School for the learners to start considering careers in the ICT field since everything is computerised nowadays.

Mlanda Girls Secondary School Head Teacher, Edines Banda, hailed MACRA for the donation, saying the students would now be equipped with various skills in ICT.
