Statehouse Rebuffs Rumors That Chakwera’s Salary Has Been Hiked

President Lazarus Chakwera’s spokesperson Brian Banda has rebuffed rumors that salary for the president has been hiked with 40 percent.

A recent report by Business Insider placed Chakwera among 15 African leaders with bloated salaries with Paul Biya of Cameron as the highest paid.

The list also includes Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni, Zimbabwe’s Emerson Mnagagwa and Ghana’s Nana Akufo Addo.

The report says that annually, Chakwera receives around 58 million Kwacha (74,300 US Dollars) representing 399 of the GDP Per Capita.

But Banda has dismissed the reports of the said hike and says Chakwera is a servant leader and that Malawians will decide if its of paramount to increase his salary.

Speaking this morning during the weekly presidential briefings, Banda said the reports are unfounded and baseless, saying President Chakwera’s salary has not ben raised.

He therefore added that Statehouse cannot waste time responding to such rumors without basis.
