A primary School Teacher in Mponera has been arrested for setting on fire his workmate’s house in Dowa.
The suspect, who is based at Kabwinja Primary School, has been identified as Sungeni Kalonga, 32,who comes from Chilolo in the area of Traditional Authority Chakhaza in Dowa District.
He committed the offence on June 29, 2021 at around 07:30 in the morning.
Reports have indicated that during this day and time the reporter was at his bed sleeping when he heard a knock at the door of his house; he didn’t open because he had fears because of the words coming from those knocking the door that if he chose not to open the door they would break it down; and they continued saying why he fell in love affair with his wife.
After some few minutes he realized that the main door had been broken and upon seeing that he started running away and saw two men in his house.
He realized that one of the suspects was his workmate from another school but all of them had knives in their hands.
After running from a distance of about 50 meters he saw smoke coming from his house and he was afraid to return back because of them.
Cash amounting to five hundred and fifteen thousand kwacha(K515 000) which he found after selling tobacco, all beddings, all clothes from the members of the family, 33 bags of maize, kitchen utensils and solar panel all amounting to K1, 500,000 were burnt.
The suspect will appear before court soon to answer charges of arson which contravenes section 337 of the penal code after investigations.
