Govt introduces new restrictions as Covid 19 surges

Date:

As one way of containing the further spread of the novel Covid 19, the Government through the Ministry of Health and the Presidential Taskforce on Covid 19 has introduced new Covid 19 preventive measures.

According to Health Minister Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, Malawi is registering many Covid19 cases in the Third wave, she says because of this the ministry has decided to introduce Covid19 response levels as it is done in South Africa while speaking at a press briefing in Lilongwe.

Kandodo Chiponda says from June 1 to July 6, 2021, Malawi has recorded 3,032 positive Covid-19 cases.

The ministry has since imposed a curfew which will be observed from 10 pm to 6 am.

Among other things, indoor Public gatherings have been trimmed from 100 to 50 and outdoor from 250 to 100 per event as overnight prayers are now banned.

On funerals, she says vigils have been banned and only 10 people are allowed inside the house and that burial should be done within 48hours.

The Minister has also called on the banks to ensure that ATMs have enough cash at all times.

On restrictions, Chiponda says bars and nightclubs should only operate from 2 pm to 10 pm.

According to Chiponda, people are encouraged to buy beer and drink at home.

She says the ministry has already engaged the Malawi Police to enforce this restriction.

The government is encouraging screening temperatures and enforcing the wearing of masks at entrances of markets
