Smallholder farmers to access fertilizer at government price

Government has assured farmers in the country that they will access the fertilizer at a reasonable price.

Minister of Agriculture Lobin Lowe made the assurance Tuesday when Liwonde Fertilizer Terminal of Malawi Fertilizer Company was being inaugurated by the State President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera.

Lowe said government will ensure that the price of fertilizer is reasonable for every Malawian to access it from all suppliers to ensure food security is maintained in the country.

“Every fertilizer supplier will be mandated to sign a contract or an agreement with government on prices for the people to access it,” said Lowe.

He further said government has the responsibility of protecting smallholder farmers from the recent increase of fertilizer saying K40, 000 per 50 kilograms bag was a joke of the season for the Malawians.
