Chiwaya’s shooting incident forces Parliament to tighten security

The shooting incident of former Deputy Speaker Clement Chiwaya has forced the National Assembly to tighten security at the chamber.

Chairperson of the Legal Affairs Committee of Parliament, Peter Dimba announced security amendments within national assembly today when Parliament reconvened for the 49th meeting in the capital Lilongwe.

Chairperson of the Legal Affairs Committee of Parliament, Peter Dimba, has just announced security amendments within national assembly.

These include a ban on the presence of weapons and provision of sanctions to anyone including law makers who fail to surrender any weapon prior to entering parliament building.

One of the sanctions is a deduction of allowances on MPs who miss deliberations after being barred from entering the national assembly as a result of failure to surrender a weapon.

The stringent security measures, according to Dimba come in the wake of the incident involving former Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Dr. Clement Chiwaya, who accessed the office of Clerk of Parliament, and shot himself.
