MDF to deal with underperforming athletes joining military

The Malawi Defence Force (MDF) has announced the enactment of a new regulation in which all athletes joining the military will be signing a five-year commitment to maintain high-level performance as they used to before being employed.

The military institution’s Director of Sports and Culture, Colonel Henderson Chilenga, has said that management is looking into the proposal which he says is aimed at encouraging athletes to continue excelling in their respective sports codes.

Colonel Chilenga sais the MDF is concerned that many athletes are backtracking in sports when they join the force.

According to Colonel Chilenga, the new law will enable the MDF to take any action against athletes who do not perform as desired within five years of joining the army.

He cited MDF football teams who failed to get a top four finish in the just-ended league campaign despite having huge numbers of players who were employed on the premise of footballers to serve in the teams.

In recent years, the MDF has recruited a high number of athletes within its fold, notably footballers, athletes and boxers.
